Nick Kowalski is a documentary filmmaker, director, and cinematographer based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.
His work is observational and character-driven, built around real people and real situations, where the drama is found rather than constructed. He is drawn to stories that sit at the edge of something: communities in transition, individuals navigating extraordinary circumstances, moments that feel both particular and universal.
His most recent film, Girls' Flight Out, (co-directed with Anna Pearson), is in official selection at Doc Edge 2026. Pedals to Powder toured nationally as part of the Big Bike Film Night across 54 locations in New Zealand. Previous films include Changabang: Return to the Shining Mountain, winner of Best NZ Made Film at the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival and finalist at Banff Mountain Film Festival; and Enchainment, winner of Best Mountaineering Film at Eho Mountain Film Festival and official selection at Kendal Mountain Film Festival.
He is currently in development on his first feature documentary.
Alongside his documentary work, Nick has built a parallel career in commercial and branded content, working with The North Face, Macpac, Crankworx, Snow Sports NZ, Stirling Sports and the University of Canterbury, among others.
